Donghu Road, a relaxed and graceful thoroughfare off bustling Huaihai Road
Donghu Road, originally named "Router Doumer" with the intention of commemorating a former French governor of colonial Vietnam, is a relaxed and graceful thoroughfare off bustling Huaihai Road. It is among the best-preserved scenic streets in Shanghai's Xuhui District, branching off from Huaihai Road and stretching to Changle Road, for a total length of 474 meters.
Shaded by a double line of mature trees, Donghu Road has a wide selection of exotic restaurants and bars, in an atmosphere enriched by countless legendary stories preserved in its heritage buildings.
Besides a graceful villa secluded in the deep alley at No.20 Donghu Road, accompanied by a distinctive pavilion structure at the crossing of Xinle Road, there are two prominent buildings especially worth your attention. The first is the duplex villa in the alley at No.17, the site of the former Belgian consulate in Shanghai. The second is a modern villa in the courtyard of No.70, which has been opened as a boutique hotel, but was historically the residence of Du YueSheng 杜月笙, a controversial figure in the early stage of China's modern history.
